About the Author
Tomoko Okubo began research on straw crafts whose roots lie in ancient Europe beginning in 2005, with a particular emphasis on those produced in the Himmeli region of Finland. She has promoted Himmeli crafts in Japan through publications, exhibitions and workshops. The author reached a realization of the fundamental relationship between himmeli and human beings based on historical context, established through limited available texts, as well as experience and personal interpretation. The author has since been freed of a concept of “Finnish” himmeli, focusing instead on such basic concepts as creating thread from grass, and growing wheat from seeds. She acquired a minimalist approach that culminated in 2012. Okubo has aspired toward harmony and has been able to work harmony into the process of creating himmeli based on an understanding of nature, also acquired through work with himmeli. It is a feeling of actualizing an inner vibration or chord rather than a deliberate act of creation.
